The place so called because it is “Place of power and strength” build as the memorial site of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. She was the first lady prime minister of India. She is appreciated for her strong determination and positive approach towards a good Country. It is located the southeast direction of Red Fort and on the banks of the Yamuna River. Mahatma Gandhi Marg was known as the main ring road close to Raj Ghat, which is the memorial site of Rajiv Gandhi. He is the son of Smt Indira Gandhi.
 
Indira Gandhi was the first child of pundit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. Her name was Kamla Nehru who later became their only child. She led India through three successful terms but was assassinated by her own bodyguard gunned by total 31 bullets screwed inside her body on 31st October 1984. She died on the way to the hospital succumbing under the bullet injury.
 
The last rite is conducted at Shakti Sthal memorial ground and her cremation was completed on the place. The stone of grey-reddish color is erected there and a site was covered by marble platform in her honor. Her words in speech, which she had given night before, read ‘I don’t mind if my life goes in the service of the nation. If I die today, every drop of my blood will rejuvenate the nation’. The memorial ground is covered in immense greenery and dotted shady trees creating a good ambiance.
 
Shakti Sthal remains open on all days. Entry is free and the timings are 05:00 hours – 19:30 hours from the month of April to September and October to March. Parking facilities are also available for visitors traveling. The nearest metro station is Kashmiri gate metro station to commute to the place.
