Brief History of Mathura:

This is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna who was born in the Yadu dynasty. According to Ramayana, the Prince Shatrughan killed Lavanasura who was a demon and got this land. Later this place was known as Madhuvan as it had dense forests. Later it was called Madhupura and later it was named as Mathura.
 
This city was the capital of the Sursena kingdom in the 6th century BCE. In the 4th and 2nd century BCE it was ruled by the Maurya Empire. There are findings that suggest that the city was under the control of Indo-Greeks then under the control of Indo-Scythian as well. The Kushan empire was also in charge of this place.
 
Later the city was invaded and destroyed by Muhammad Gazni and then again by Sikander Lodhi. He was called as the destroyer of the Hindu deities. Emperor Aurangzeb built Shahi-Eidgah Mosque adjacent to the Krishna Janambhoomi temple during his rule.
