Agra Fort is a second most visited monument in the city, After Taj Mahal. In earlier times, Agra used to be the capital of the Mughal Empire and this fort was built as their residence. It was celebrated as Badal Garh fort in the past and was the first monument to be named as a heritage site.


History & Facts behind the Agra Red Fort -

Akbar was first to build the fort. It was the royal authority of Mughals in the 16th century. However, the fort has been in existence since the 11th century. The structure was part of many battles and wars. According to the stories from people, it belonged first to Raj put king. It was totally made of bricks. When the monument handover to Akbar’s hand then he entirely changes it as he required to make Agra his capital. A makeover was completed and the monument is turned into red colour stone. The work of the fort was started in 1565 and get covered in 1573. Primarily it was built for military installation and then named as the royal residence.

 The wall was 70 foot high and extended over 2 km of area. When Shah Jahan owned the fort in the 17th century, He changed its infrastructure and made it a marble palace from inside; After Aurangzeb expanded the Fort created a tunnel that was a secret.
After the death of Aurangzeb in the 18th century, it was ruined. Marathas explore it and owned it after other kings fought over the fort. It came into British’s hand finally, then after independence, Indian army used one part of a fort for army troupes.


Attractions of Agra Red Fort for Tourist:

  • The fort sets an example of the historic blend of an Islamic and Hindu style of architecture. The structure has a touch of Gujarati and Bengali planning design.
  • The fort has two main gates- the Lahore gate and the Delhi gate. Entry of the tourist is made from Lahore gate.
  • Indian Military controlled Delhi gate. Wooden drawbridge and Moet was seen in the Delhi gate.
  • The inner gate is called the elephant gate. The two elephants were sculpted gate sides.   
  • Delhi gate is not opened for tourist.
  • Jahangir palace was the main building of the Fort. The beautiful area created by Akbar for Jahangir.
  • Khas Mahal is the residence of Mumtaj Mahal and Shahjahan. It has the taste of Islamic and Persian style. Walls of the palace are jeweled with gold and precious metal, has alcoves, lattice window, and fountain.
  • Mussman Burj- a jail where Shahjahan was kept as a request because he wanted to see Tajmahal until death. It is octagonal in design.
  • Diwan –I-Khas- It was built next to the tower has flower motif, inlay work of marble, the artwork of Persian. Famous peacock throne was inside it.
  • Peacock throne had famous Koh-I-Noor diamond; but was looted by Persian invader- Nadir Shah.

Agra Fort is the most important loveliness. People prefer to take same day Agra tour which is most popular by the visitors. Tourist loves to come in the winter season to here, as because of its pleasant weather. The fort remains open from morning to evening. During the government holidays, the fort gets crowded.

An Indian can pay 40 INR and for Foreigners, it is 550 INR. Children are free below the age of 15. You can hire Guide available on the ticket counter. You can buy tickets for Light and sound show. Indian can pay INR 70 and for foreigners INR 200.
